The change in culture from office-based working to Working from Home whilst accelerated by COVID-19 is probably not unexpected as citizens realise they can carry out the same task, without the need for a daily commute. In a post-COVID-19 world citizen’s will expect to be allowed to continue working in this way and some employers have already acknowledged that their employees can do this, call centre operators being a good example. The challenge to allowing this to happen is the speed and quality of the data connections to which individuals working at home have access. Many people do not have a landline or broadband contract and rely upon their mobile phone to provide them with data.

The alternative to landline-based connectivity is to provide citizens with the same or better data speeds through Fixed Wireless Access. The infrastructure required to provide this service is now the focus for the Telco’s. The infrastructure best suited to enabling this are the existing poles and structures owned by Councils and Utilities. There is now an opportunity to upgrade their infrastructure, at the same time as providing a platform for the Telco’s to install their Mini-macro, Macro and Small Cell equipment, covering 3G, 4G and 5G. Councils and Utilities own this valuable real estate and can benefit through charging for the use of these poles to host this equipment.

The benefit to everyone of this approach is that

  • there is no increase in street clutter (old pole replaced with new pole)
  • the Telco gain access to the ideal location for the service to be provided from
  • the Council and Utility gains a location for adding smart city infrastructure such as
    • Sensors
    • EV charging points
    • Cameras
  • the Councils and Utilities have a new recurring revenue stream
  • the Citizens get a far better data connection enabling them to work from home more efficiently

LIGMAN Evolve has been formed to provide the pole based solution which enables Councils and Utilities to benefit from the revenue potential available through providing infrastructure located where it is needed for Telco’s to deliver optimised data connections and speeds in the suburbs.
